Wow 3 inch pipes!, I bet they were tricky around the rear end area!
I have the band clamp as well from Pypes, I know there are other brands as well.

Just got my 2 1/2" Pypes on the 70 Caprice. Fit very good, I was nervous about it. I had to shorten a couple pieces but other than that it was pretty easy. Hooked right up to my headers. Waiting on more band clamps to finish it up.

I got the Turbo mufflers, I really like them! Nice throaty sound and not obnoxious.

Thanks to all for all the help. Exhaust Questions - Chevy Message Forum (6) Cant wait to go drive it! Anxious to try out the FTI converter.

I'll get some pics when I get done. Exhaust Questions - Chevy Message Forum (7)

Jeff,
How did the bump-ups in the crossmember line-up with the way the headers exited / pipes ended-up? I measured the offset from mine but just relative to the headers. I realized my measurement might be specific to my unbranded stainless headers so I didn't bother posting the numbers. I referenced the flange of the transmission pan and tried to measure, separately to the center of the header collector and the center of the transmission bump-up.

What was your experience with the hangers/brackets in back of the mufflers?

Scott

Here are some pics, I am not done, waiting on more clamps. I just put it up there for a trial fit, have a little more adjusting to do but need my clamps. The hangers at the back of the mufflers will go in stock location. The tailpipes Im not sure but I'll figure that out.

The headers are outside of the xmember bumps by a ways. Hopefully you can see in the pics, I was in kinda of a hurry tonight. I had to shorten the front pipes to get the bend to come out where the bumps are, think I took off about an 1-1 1/2" of each side. Had to shorten the tailpipes where they go into mufflers, still have a little more to do. Didn't want to get carried away before I got the rest in place.

Need anything else just holler, be glad to oblige. I wont have clamps till middle of next week and time.

Regards, Jeff

Jeff,
I was thinking if someone has a very short 45 degree adapter, with a section between two 45's the offset could be achieved. I couldn't find anything so I modelled something which would accept a 2.5" pipe with a little less than 1mm total clearance.

My thought was, if I can make it small enough, it wouldn't break-the-bank to 3D print in stainless. I would take 4 of them though and you would need to cut a straight section of pipes the right length to complete the proper offset.

Scott
Edit: Well I didn't look hard enough. They make one in 2.48". Anyway nearly exactly what I modeled is available. Mine allowed the "other" pipes to slip inside.

It's amazing what's available these days.

I remember in the early 70's driving to a local dealership and speaking to one of their mechanics on how to remove a harmonic dampner on my VW.

I measured the centerline to centerline of the front pipes on the Magnaflow exhaust tonight and it seemed to be 13.5 inches. That's very close to the centerline of the 2 transmission bump-ups. The centerline of my headers is right around 22 3/4".

The place I bought the 45 degree pieces from acted as if they might make some straight sections for me to length. I'm planning to ask if they could flare the ends for a slip fit (lap joint). That would allow some tolerance and it would be easier to weld (no need to perfectly align 2 cut edges for a buttweld).
